Habits of Mind

Habits of mind are characteristics of effective thinkers, expert problem solvers, thoughtful decision makers, and they guide decision making when confronted with problems, the answer to which is not immediately available.

At WCA, the English department focuses on developing these six habits of mind in every student. We explicitly teach each habit, practice them on an ongoing basis, refer to them throughout the day, and measure them in individual and group settings.

Ownership
- Is this my best work?

Perspective
- How would others see this?

Evidence
- How do I know what I know?

Wonder
- Why? What if?

Innovation
- What new approaches are possible?

Mindfulness
- How do my actions affect others?
